If someone were to say to you that you went above and beyond what was expected what would you think? Would you think they had a basis for saying that? Would you characterize yourself as a person who goes above and beyond to achieve a goal? The reason this challenge is so important is that we tend to settle for mediocrity. I’m not saying you specifically, but I hope you self-examine before you discount yourself from the challenge. If we aren’t people who have measurable goals and are challenged to achieve them, then we are likely not a person who is known to go above and beyond. So much of my content revolves around people who are becoming a better version of themselves. Then going above and beyond should be stamped in your daily DNA. As the late great Vince Lombardi said “Winning isn’t a sometimes thing, it is an all the time thing“. In other words, to achieve the type of goals that we of recovery strive to achieve we must be characterized as people who regularly go above and beyond. Because of this thing we call gravity it is scientifically impossible to coast uphill. Since most of the things that we want to accomplish in life are uphill we need to pedal every day. If we stop peddling, we stop achieving. The minute I cease striving to go above and beyond I cease to go above and beyond.

When we consider nature, we can see the same example. If you’ve ever watched a bird sore, or a fish swim, or a gazelle move, then you would see that they continue in the activity that got them to that point of travel to get to the next point of travel. That is what the recovered life needs to be characterized by. We need to be known as a person who continues to strive to go above and beyond, day in and day out. We do this because we know that if we are not going forward there stands a good chance that we are going backward. People like you and me can’t afford to go backward. It can be disastrous. We are like a car rolling backward, downhill, without the engine on, stuck in neutral, and with no breaks. Whether we’re going to crash is not the question. The question is when will we crash and how bad the damage will be. I encourage you to be a person who continues to go above and beyond. We need a person who is not afraid to be held accountable for measurements that determine our growth. I wish you well in all that you do. I trust and pray your journey will find you going above and beyond. If I can help in any way, as a life/sober coach, please let me know. Robert is the Recovery Guy. Getting clean and sober on April 25, 1986 has given me the insight and practical skill set to not only stay sober, but to also re-invent myself to the person I always wanted to become. Showing others how to do this is my life goal.
