As we travel through this thing called life we hope that things go smoothly. We hope that things go to our liking and life isn’t a day-to-day challenge. I would hope that this is true for you as you consider your personal life. I’ve said before and I’ll say it again, that if we learn to control the “controllable“ we are less likely to be controlled by the “uncontrollable”. The uncontrollable in our life should be the exception, not the rule. Having said that, sometimes life throws us a challenge, or a curveball if you will and we end up on the rocky road. I think that a person is best characterized not by things that go well or agreeable in their life, but when that road is rocky. The late great Zig Ziglar stated, “you can tell some of a man’s character when he wins, but you can tell it all when he loses“. My question to you is, how are you on the rocky road? This is such an important area to address. As people who have striven to overcome obstacles to living a productive life we have to know that this is a possibility. The challenge for us is that we don’t know when the rocky road will come nor do we know what will make up that rocky road. Sometimes it’s the loss of a person that is dear to us. Sometimes it is the loss of finances, health, or friendships. We can’t predict what it will be, but you can be assured the rocky road will come. How do you, as a person of recovery, plan for something negative while living in a positive world?
Many years ago, I created a workshop entitled “staying positive in a negative world.” I know that seems somewhat dark, yet the group of individuals I was speaking to had a tremendous amount of pressure on them that the general population does not have. Everything came down to preparation. Have you ever seen those commercials for purchasing foods that would last for five or 10 years just in case of a disaster? That seemed very far-fetched, but just recently with this cOVID-19 virus outbreak, those people seem to be pretty smart. I’m not saying to live our life as a doomsday type person. What I’m saying is, sometimes the road does get rocky and we have to keep ourselves in the best emotional, mental, spiritual, and physical shape to withstand any challenge that this life brings us. If the challenge does come we will be prepared by staying in a positive so we can handle the negative. If we are those fortunate enough in life to forgo the challenges I am talking about, how much better off do you think we will be. We are better off planning for something and have it not occur then ignoring it and have it occur. I hope this makes sense to you. I hope you’re Striving every day to be the best possible version of you. I hope that the changes you are making will allow you to withstand the challenges of the rocky road.
