the search

The Search. Those of us who have decided there is another way to live or find the need to elevate our life go on a journey. Dorothy, from The Wizard of Oz, is one of the greatest cinematic stories ever told with this theme. We can be so much like Dorothy. For some of us, our search starts out at a young age while others begin searching later in life. Some don’t have a clue what they are looking for and aren’t even sure if they will know what it is if they find it. Others say “I will know it when I see it.” Sometimes, what we are searching for is a small piece to a larger puzzle. It is small but it’s necessary. Other pieces may be more major and put the finishing touches on life’s mosaic we have been hoping to complete. So many of us are like nomads or Gypsies not sure of what we are searching for and likely wouldn’t know what we have found if we found the missing piece.

Back in 1968, there was a group called the Moody Blues. The Moody Blues were a psychedelic rock group that emerged as part of the Timothy Leary movement of LSD and other hallucinogens. They knew there was an entire generation of young people who were lost and on a journey. The album, In Search of the Lost Chord, musically addressed a spiritual, emotional, mental, and even physical need of this generation.

Like so many people of recovery, we are like this great musical project that is just lacking that one chord to help finish the work.

We know we are searching for a lost chord, but being lost ourselves we aren’t even sure of where to look and the journey begins.

Where are you at in your Search for the Lost Chord? Are you like the happy wanderer that feels if you find it, you find it? Or are you like so many of us that if you don’t find it you will disappear into further darkness or death?

What does active and healthy searching bring us to?

  1. Recognizing we are missing something is the most important thing we need to know
  2. Searching brings us to an awareness that we desire to be complete
  3. Searching helps us more fully know who we are
  4. We will find more than we started looking for
  5. We will meet others along the way
  6. Searching and finding encourages us to search more
  7. Searching is a lifetime journey
  8. Searching means I have more to find and leads to humility
  9. I can use what I find to helps others searching we are never alone

In Search of the Lost Chord is the perfect metaphor for life’s journey. I hope to see you along the way.

Robert is the Recovery Guy. Getting clean and sober on April 25, 1986 has given me the insight and practical skill set to not only stay sober, but to also re-invent myself to the person I always wanted to become. Showing others how to do this is my life goal.
