As we continue our journey with the steps, we are going to jump into the deep end of the pool. Step Four is subtitled “We are Only as Sick as Our Secrets.” As long as I hold on to my past, I will stay sick in the present. Step Four is my opportunity to take a deeper account that I will then be encouraged to share. Step Four, in the 12 and 12 of Alcoholics Anonymous, states on page 43 “We wish to look squarely at the unhappiness this has caused others and ourselves. By discovering what our emotional deformities are we can move toward their correction. Without a willing and persistent effort to do this there can be little sobriety or contentment for us.”
Without Step Four, the likelihood of one being happy, joyous, and free is greatly diminished. You may stay substance or behavior free, but true sobriety will elude you.
