As part of our journey, we need a way by which to measure where we are at. Sometimes we are at because of progress and sometimes we take a step backward. Obviously, moving forward is usually more fun than going backward. That is not to say that there is nothing to learn when we were digressing, it can be uncomfortable and even disappointing. Today I want to talk about milestones. A milestone, as defined by dictionary.com, is a significant event or stage in the life, progress, development of a person. Certainly, our recovery, regardless of time, has Milestones by which we can measure our progress. We can define our progress by the milestones of life.

  • The day I went into treatment
  • Learning to become a “good application”
  • When my dad told me “Your mom and I don’t worry about you anymore”
  • When I moved back to CA to see if I could rebuild my life.
  • The week my dad died
  • Meeting and marrying Laura
  • Becoming a sober father to Jane and Robb
  • Started working on restoring relationships with Cathleen and Carol
  • Meeting my daughter Frankie for the first time
  • When I got my degree
  • When I went to work in treatment
  • Developing my recovery message to reach the masses
  • 10-20-30 year anniversary
  • Even though our recovery journey can be characterized by the milestones, they don’t make the person. The person makes the milestones.

Robert is the Recovery Guy. Getting clean and sober on April 25, 1986 has given me the insight and practical skill set to not only stay sober, but to also re-invent myself to the person I always wanted to become. Showing others how to do this is my life goal.
