As you all know, I love movies, shows, nature, relationships. I draw so many comparative examples from the things I experience and enjoy during my life. As a person who lived disconnected for so long, I love finding a connection in many varied things. Have you ever seen the movie Field of Dreams? It is a 1989 movie starring Kevin Costner and he plays the role of Ray Kinsella an Iowa corn farmer.

Isn’t recovery the place where dreams come true? Isn’t recovery about coming in with little to no hope, living a shattered life (some more shattered than others) and then realizing there is another way, and we meet people who have and are traveling that path. Since our addiction was about living a hell on earth, our recovery is about heaven on earth.

While wandering in a corn field, Ray Kinsella hears a strange whisper: “If you build it, he will come.”  Are you building your recovery or are you merely stopped drinking, using or engaging in negative behavior? Here is why this question is so important. For many years, you lived in a negative life of despair we built. If we don’t build a new house/recovery to live in, we stand a good chance of going back to the old house.

Here are 5 things I think we need to consider when rebuilding.

  1. Believe with all that we are that the previous building is not for us
  2. Find and stay close who have built their own Field of Dreams
  3. Use what they did as an initial blueprint for you
  4. Be open to making and correcting mistakes
  5. Understand that building this Field of Dreams is a lifelong process

Of course, there are many other things we can do, but if we do these 5 things we will have a good stay. Remember, “When We Build it, it Will Come.”

Robert is the Recovery Guy. Getting clean and sober on April 25, 1986 has given me the insight and practical skill set to not only stay sober, but to also re-invent myself to the person I always wanted to become. Showing others how to do this is my life goal.
