regaining control

Regaining Control. For so many of us the notion of regaining control isn’t possible because we never felt like we had control in the first place. Consequently, how can you regain some thing you never had? I completely understand that and if you fit into that category then I want you to view this podcast as gaining control.

As you well know, I am often a walking cliché. I believe that sayings become clichés by having elements of truth. I also believe that reading things as absolute truth can be limiting, if not dangerous. What I do is view things a little deeper to see if I can add to or elevate the cliché and that’s what we are going to do today.

I saw a meme the other of a cliché I have come across over the years. The cliché is “There are only two days in the year when noting can be done. Those days are yesterday and tomorrow.” Maybe you have heard this cliché before. It seems very reasonable that it would be true. This can be especially true for those of us involved in 12 Step Recovery where we live ODAAT.

It for this very reason I want to challenge you to elevate your thinking and let you know I have found a way to have the best of all worlds. I can stay in the now/day while at least having a major say if not outright controlling what yesterday and tomorrow look like.

One of the most brilliantly composed writing I have ever read is the Sandskrit Poem by the Kalidasa. It is simply titled “Look to this Day”

Look to this day: For it is life, the very life of life. In its brief course Lie all the verities and realities of your existence. The bliss of growth, The glory of action, The splendour of achievement Are but experiences of time. For yesterday is but a dream And tomorrow is only a vision; And today well-lived, makes Yesterday a dream of happiness And every tomorrow a vision of hope. Look well therefore to this day; Such is the salutation to the ever-new dawn!

What is it that I draw from this beautiful poem that gives me the notion I can control the outcome of yesterday and even tomorrow.

The notion lies in the magic of the day and managing expectations. I am going to let you sort this out on your own. I have been finding higher levels of this for some time now and my control has increased with my faith. I believe that how I want to view my days are based on my actions and those I control. By extension of me control how I live today opens the door for me having a say in my yesterdays and my tomorrows.

Robert is the Recovery Guy. Getting clean and sober on April 25, 1986 has given me the insight and practical skill set to not only stay sober, but to also re-invent myself to the person I always wanted to become. Showing others how to do this is my life goal.
