deadly silence

Deadly Silence. Throughout our lives we come across various enemies that prevent us from reaching our full potential. The enemies can be people or circumstances. They can be things that we do to ourselves or things that have been done to us. These things can affect us various ways from not very much, to marginally, to moderately to greatly and then to catastrophically.

It has been my experience the most potentially harming thing is something that you can’t see and you can’t hear.

The most potentially dangerous thing in our lives is Silence. Silence harms and kills more people than it should be allowed. One of the saddest things about the devastation of silence is that it is self-inflicted. It is also preventable.

Silence leads to secrets and as I have said before, “We are only as sick as our secrets.” What is it about silence that when we engage in it for safety, it is Deadly?

Definition of silence: absence of sound or noise

Definition of secret: kept from knowledge or view

Knowing this, how do we escape the deadly grasp of silence.

  1. Come to an understanding of how harmful silence can be
  2. Know you aren’t alone. You would be amazed at all the people who have learned to hide what you are opening up to.
  3. Any shame we experience is mostly self-induced
  4. Realize that the initial pain/discomfort or loss we experience is temporary
  5. Designate as least one person of trust that we can share our secrets with and break the silence
  6. Begin one step at a time
  7. Be committed to the process
  8. Use the freedom that breaking the silence brings as an avenue to empowerment
  9. Replace past behavior with new healthy behavior
  10. Share your success

When we walk in this light and freedom we become convinced that going back is never an option.

Robert is the Recovery Guy. Getting clean and sober on April 25, 1986 has given me the insight and practical skill set to not only stay sober, but to also re-invent myself to the person I always wanted to become. Showing others how to do this is my life goal.
